Ask James...

Here are some commonly asked questions about Freesat.

What is Freesat?

Freesat is a digital service available throughout the UK. This is in preparation for the digital switch over which will happen between now and 2012.

What's the difference between Freesat, Freesat from Sky and FTA satellite television?

Freesat is supplied by the BBC and ITV whereas Freesat from Sky is supplied by BSkyB. FTA(free to air) satellite television uses the signals broadcast by the satellites to view digital channels. To view Freesat from Sky you will need a Sky box, whereas with FTA television and Freesat you can choose a box from a number of different manufacturers. FTA television doesn't have an EPG, and doesn't use the interactive content supplied by Sky, BBC or ITV. FTA satellite and Freesat boxes can receive High definition content. Although FTA satellite television is free, you will still need a TV licence.

How many channels do I get with Freesat?

You will receive more channels with freesat. You will receive around 80 TV and radio channels, including High Definition services from the BBC & ITV. You will also have interactive services which will replace Ceefax and Teletext.

What is Digital Television?

Digital television is the new way of transmitting pictures to your television set. With this new technology it is possible to send interactive content, as well as provide more channels with improved picture quality.

Do I need anything extra to receive Freesat?

To receive freesat you will need a satellite dish and a set-top box connected to your television. You can also get a TV with freesat built-in, so you don't need a separate set-top box.

I already have freeview built into my television - can I just plug the satellite dish directly into my television?

No! You will need a freesat set-top box to view freesat.

How much does all this cost?

If you don't have a satellite dish then you will need to install a satellite dish. Installation can cost from £80, and installation will in some cases include the cost of the dish. You will then need a freesat receiver. Standard Definition boxes cost from £50 and High Definition boxes cost from £150. Later in the year there will be an option for a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) box to allow you to record TV to watch later. If you don't want spaghetti junction behind your TV then there is also the option to buy the Panasonic Freesat TV. This costs about £1,300.

Can I have freesat in more than one room?

Yes, it is possible to have freesat in more than one room.

And what about a subscription cost?

There is no subscription cost, however you will still need a TV licence.

What the difference between a Standard Definition and a High Defintition set-top box?

High Definition will give a better quality picture than Standard Definition, however, you will need a HD Ready television to go with your set-top box. SCART is used for standard definition and HDMI, DVI and Component Leads are used for High Definition. If you have your set-top box configured in High definition mode, you will not need to change the configurations to watch Standard Definition.

Can I use Ceefax or Teletext on my freesat box?

As ceefax and teletext are analogue services they are not available through freesat. However there is a replacement for these services called BBCi and TeletextDigital. This service can be easier to use than Ceefax/Teletext as you use the arrow keys and the select button to navigate through the menus at your pace.

How can I find out what's on?

Freesat uses an Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) to show what's on TV. This is useful as you can set-up program reminders and, if you have a PVR, this gives you the ability to record at the touch of a button.

How do I watch High Definition Television?

To watch High Defintion Television you will need a HD Ready television connected to your High Definition freesat set-top box. You will need to have an HDMI cable, DVI with audio cables, or component leads with audio cables connected between your set-top box and television. You will then need to configure your television and set-top box so that they can receive High Definition.

What is S/PDIF?

S/PDIF is used for carrying audio signals from your set top box to your Home Cinema system. This system is a lot more advanced than using the conventional cables and provides better quality audio. This is the ultimate investment if you want the best freesat viewing experience.

What is a PVR?

A PVR is a function within a set-top box which will allow you to record programs onto a hard disk within the box. In certain cases, you will then have the facility to record from the box onto a video or DVD.

Can I view subtitles on a freesat box?
